I decided to start a thread to discuss current movies. The rules are simple, any film discussed here must have come out in the last year. Reviews, beefs, praise, what ever, it's all fine.
WARNING THIS THREAD WILL BE VERY SPOILER HEAVY SINCE IT WILL BE ABOUT DISCUSSING CURRENT MOVIES.[glow=red,2,300][/glow]

I will kick it off with a note about the last harry potter movie. I just saw it last night, and did you know that Emma Watson is legal age now? Because Warner Bros. knows, and they REALLY want you to know. Jesus Christ Warner Bros, we get it, she has cleavage. On that note, I got such a kick out of the time skip. 19 years later, everyone else looks older, especially ron, but Hermione hadn't aged a day. She was a 36 year old teenager. Good old warner bros. Nothing but class.
Troubling questions about sexuallizing a girl that was introduced to the world as a 11 year-old aside, it ended up being a really fun movie, and a great way to end the series. If you haven't seen the other films, this one is not going to make much sense. If you just want to see wizards doing their wizard thing, then this movie is tremendously fun.

The only thing I have to contribute to the Harry Potter talk is that apparently Hermione & Young Neil from Scott Pilgrim are an item IRL: 24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lpsyj6gJAW1qzlw2io1_500.jpg26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lpqq74pjqs1qd90c0o1_500.jpgOh God, a space for me to talk about movies again. YOU'LL ALL BE SORRY (also trying a thing for this: bolding / italicizing movies so my stacks of jibbajabba are easier to parse for titles since I talk about so fucking many of them) Captain America was... (a) a 2-hour trailer for The Avengers movie (b) a better Indiana Jones movie than Crystal Skull(c) all of the above I put this & Thor on equal footing for now. I did like how self-aware the movie was about skipping beats of the 'hero's origin story'; like when the kid held hostage by the HYDRA agent gets tossed in the water and Steve almost dove in after him: KID (treading water): I'm fine! GO GET HIM! I try to keep quiet about movies that I really like because I'll either end up having to defend them or see how flawed they really are on closer inspection, but as the year goes there are 3 entries for my 'best of 2011' list so far (in no particular order): (3) Paul(2) Hanna(1) Attack The BlockThe lazy description for AtB would be Shaun of the Dead with aliens instead of zombies, but if the shoe fits... Anyway, the slang & characters may not be everyone's cup of tea but it was the first movie I've seen this season that genuinely felt like a summer blockbuster; balancing humor, action, and tension in equal measure. True Legend! First thing that Yuen Woo-Ping ( The Matrix, Kill Bill, Unleashed, The Forbidden Kingdom, almost anything rad that involved someone kicking someone else ever) has both choreographed AND directed since the original Iron Monkey. Like that movie, it has some plot digressions into Chinese history & myth that threaten to lose its audience -- but stay with it if you want to check out some of the sweetest fight scenes you'll see in this decade. Finally caught The Warrior's Way too. It's essentially a big screen version of Samurai Western, an old bargain bin PS2 game. You can tell what kind of movie you're in for when the title THE GREATEST SWORDSMAN IN THE WORLD literally floats in front of someone, then visibly transfers to his killer upon his defeat. The acting is hammy at best. Barbossa from Pirates of the Caribbean shows up slumming for a paycheck, plus the Southern accents make me want to tear my ears off of my head and bury my face in my hands. There's some clever choreography by the action director behind Versus & Devil May Cry 3, but Ninja Assassin is a far better action fusion of East & West. Whew! Enough for now.

OH, I also saw Cowboys and Aliens the other day. I gotta say, I loved it. I think the best way to describe it was FUN.
It's a story about old west JamesBond Cloud Strife wagon train robber guy (whom I will from this point on call Badass McKillington) who wakes up having traded his memories for a sweet Rolex. He then McKillingtons some scalpers, steels their horse and their dog, and wanders into town where he meets the priest who will give him dying words of advice, the coward who will eventually become a lesser badass, the kid who will become a man by getting a lucky kill, an annoying teen, Quorra from Tron, and Han Solo Indiana Jones The President of the United States Yosemite Sam.
As per usual, terrorists aliens come and take Harrison Ford's family, because his family is made out of gold or something, and everybody teams up to go get 'em back. Then the move gets really explody for a while, Yosemite Sam's heart grows 3 sizes that day, Quorra from Tron is a phoenix, there is a noble and unnecessary sacrifice, and Badass McKillington rides off into the sunset. Oh, and they meet up with Badass McKillington's old robber band and one of his old gang members is easily the most likable character in the movie.
The moral of the story is that this movie was just silly fun, and is totally worth seeing, especially on the big screen. The cinematography was wonderful, and this movie was filmed for (and should totally be watched on) the big screen. Go see it!

I think I might just go have a movie day on Sunday. There are actually a couple in theaters right now that I want to see, and Cowboys vs Aliens is one of them (duh.)

I saw Cowboys & Aliens myself yesterday. Everything Adam said was very true. The movie was fairly formulaic, but it was fun enough that I didn't care. Also, yay cowboys! \O/
Even though I spent a decent chunk of the movie both amused and alarmed by the fact that the preacher was the Kurgan from Highlander, the character who had the most impact on me was probably Daniel Craig's ass. It stole every scene it was in, and in my opinion was one of the most heartwarming elements of the movie.
Though the 'you were always my favorite' guy was pretty entertaining, too.

Right now I've put a moratorium on watching movies alone, so I've been curating a YouTube list of trailers for flicks to catch later. This year, the two remaining things I can bring myself to risk the theater for are The 3 Musketeers (Milla Jovovich and fencing!) and the new Mission Impossible (Simon Pegg! Brad Bird directing!).
2012 looks a bit more promising, though. I'm trying to be optimistic about the big tentpole movies: The Avengers (Joss Whedon directing! Samuel L. Jackson! Scarlett Johanssen!), The Amazing Spider-Man (ROFL 'Peter Parkour') and The Dark Knight Rises (Nolan may be teflon now, but I wince at the memory of Batman Begins & The Prestige).
I also have high hopes for John Carter. It may look like a goofy mash-up of Blue Cat People Avatar & Clash of the Titans, but Andrew Stanton (of Finding Nemo / Wall-E / making me cry you FUCKING BASTARD) is directing so I'm at least curious.
Two Pixar directors stepping into live-action? No wonder the company got stuck doing Cars 2!

Can’t believe I haven’t mentioned it here, but the last film I saw was the anime REDLINE. The director, Takeshi Koike is an industry vet of Madhouse Studios. For those who don’t know, Madhouse is like the Studio Ghibli of animated violence.
Koike was on Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and parts of the Animatrix. I couldn’t say why I loved his style though, until a review pointed out he was the lead animator on Ninja Scroll: the movie that got me into anime in the first place.
More than a decade later (and 7 of those spent in making this movie in the first place), this guy’s still melting my eyes. This is a movie too close to me for proper recommendation, but “The Wachowski Bros.’ Speed Racer on speed” would be a good one-sentence summary.

Just went and saw Johnny English Reborn. Everybody go see it. It's getting terrible reviews because it's VERY British humor, and reviewers don't seem to get British humor. Lucky for us, most nerds do get British humor. As such, go see it, it's delightful. On an added note, stay through the credits, the last bit at the end is fucking brilliant.

Got to see the new Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol a few days ago. I'm happy to report that it's wonderful and you should go see it. That is all.
