Forgot to post here: saw The Artist & John Carter.
Assuming that everyone already knows that The Artist is silent, black & white, and features John Goodman, what surprised me is how much the movie was able to express by eliminating unnecessary dialogue. The two leads were totally able to sell the whole thing.
(In a nice behind-the-scenes bit of truism, the lead actress is the director's real-life wife. Heh).
John Carter had everything that the Star Wars prequels & (Blue Cat People) Avatar lacked: breathtaking visuals, emotionally involving characters, great action sequences, and Willem Dafoe as an alien bug warrior chieftain (which is the least unsettling he's ever looked).
That should let you know how much James Cameron, Steven Spielberg & George Lucas fucked up -- I was able to relate more to a protagonist who was an EX-CONFEDERATE SOLDIER more than the planks of wood they used as protagonists.
In fact, special accolades to the princess character who was also a scientist AND a deadly swordswoman* (which is a hell of a triple major to get from Mars University)! I totally demand a spinoff of Dejah Thoris: Warrior Princess, Ph.D: [ youtu.be/ye-AgS9Lg6M ]
The film earns its PG-13 rating, though: a beheading, an evisceration and several other moments made me double-take that this was from Disney and the guy who made Finding Nemo / Wall-E.
* She is still skimpily clothed & falls from high places often so our hero could prove white men can jump, but this is based on a story from the creator of Tarzan. He does seem to have a thing for ladies getting saved by shirtless nature boys.
