Greetings, Fictonians! This is an idea J and I have been toying with for a while now, so hopefully he will pop in and write something more eloquent. Let's make a mix tape! Since it is October, the first challenge is to make a playlist with 5 songs that would be the score for your own horror movie. The catch is you can't use any songs from actual horror movies/anime/games/etc. You have 'till the end of the month to post your list here. GOOD LUCK! -Ann

XsToRmEr1 - The Depths - (ignore the bad beginning music and stupid sonic stuff) This is very much an intro song, setting the stage for either what shit went down in flashes in order to create the ghost(s). Cause you just know me, I can't have regular old guts and blood horror. I'm a jump out and boo sort of girl. Enya - Boadicea - Mostly this is a pretty song that should have horrible/sad imagery attached to it. Perhaps a slow-mo car crash and then the following funeral. The moving on of time and the progress of the hero in depression or somesuch. Enigma - Gravity of LoveThis song is very much a song I'd have to do a lot with. I'd want to mostly cut out the main vocals and just go with the creepy latin chanting. Maybe something on a record with a scratchy overlay. E Nomine - Deine Welt (Orchestra Version) Naturally, the intense climax, full of bravery and sacrifice. Of course, I will have a cliffhanger ending. Is it an uplifting ending, or a terribly failed tragedy? Sarah McLachlan - Possession (acoustic) - Credits, perhaps hinting that the ending was bittersweet. Taken out: Libera - Salva Me -- This is a song I'd rather apply to a fantasy movie than a horror.

Just for official purposes, the 5 Song Mixtape Rules:
1. FINISH THE MIXTAPE. Five songs, no repeats; meaning don’t just copy-paste the same song 5 times (though I expect there to be some overlap between people’s lists). Remixes, covers, and live / acoustic versions are acceptable as well.
2. PROVIDE LINKS. Let us hear what matters to you! Just a couple minutes of rooting around on Google or YouTube should be enough to provide sources for your list.
3. NO PICKING ON ANYONE'S MUSICAL TASTE. I AM SERIOUS ABOUT THIS YOU GUYS. If you don't dig the selection, move on.
4. STICK TO THE THEME. While I’d like to keep the entries within the bounds of whatever the current category is, if you’re absolutely stuck but still want to contribute and whatever you want is out of bounds Rule #1 comes first. If you include explanations of your choices, all the better!
To reiterate Ann’s point on this, we ask that you try and avoid the obvious for this theme (meaning any horror soundtrack / Halloween-specific music). Believe me, this will be just as tough for us: that rule eliminates the entire Nightmare Before Christmas soundrack for me.
Amanda's gotten us off to a good start, though! Especially glad I listened to the end of the fourth selection, it made me giggle.

Sea Wolf | The Cold, The Dark & The SilenceFiona Apple | Fast As You CanI imagine the first two songs on this as conversations -- the male singer seranading a body in the trunk of his car, thumping in time with the rhythm as he drives into the woods near the river. In the second, the female singer advances upon her significant other, who all of a sudden can’t seem to open any door or window in the apartment they’re in... Radiohead | There There“Just ‘cause you feel it / Doesn’t mean it’s there.” Brr. I disagree. The video for this alone is a horror movie in itself. Osso | Year of the BoarPart Peter & the Wolf + part Alfred Hitchcock movie score = fleeing terrified into the forest. Ben Gibbard | Girls Just Wanna Have FunThe lead singer of Death Cab for Cutie turns an 80’s pop song into something you’d expect to hear coming out of an abandoned house...

My first post! Woooo! Manda told me about this and I couldn't resist. My list is pretty different from Manda and J's (both of which were awesome!). House of the Rising Sun - The AnimalsThis is probably on some horror movie soundtrack somewhere, and if it's not, it should be. I couldn't think of anything that had it so...here you go. The wailing cries make me think of despair and old, Southern ghost stories. Also, even in that outfit, the lead singer looks like a total badass. Persephone - Dead Can DanceDead earth, grave dirt, dripping leaves...moist, rotting clouds. Into the Mouth of Abandonment - Glenn DanzigI have a not very secret hard on for Danzig, but even despite that I think this song deserves a spot here. Or maybe it doesn't and I'm just thinking with my penis.Hurt - Johnny CashI don't really have much to say about this one. I just found it the other day, and I don't think I've formed a solid opinion yet. Thistledown Tears - Jeffrey FoucaultOkay. So maybe slow, haunting, earthy music with a country twang is my idea of an ideal horror movie soundtrack. Who knew? Outtakes:One guess as to what my second horror movie is about. Creepy Doll - Jonathan CoultonLittle Girls - Oingo Boingo

Elisia - I actually love Johnny Cash's cover of "Hurt." Something about his gravely old man voice gives the song an even more somber tone. It's one of the last songs he released before he passed away too.

Great contributions, you guys! I'm really surprised at how much that Danzig track grew on me, and I've constantly been listening to 'The Owl' ever since I heard it. Elisia challenged me to do a mixtape based around a horror movie concept, so I did mine about a group of juvenile delinquents that ends up trapped in a sentient city made out of plant matter that devours people. Think of it as John Carpenter’s The Thing Eats John Hughes’ The Breakfast Club, or Dark City's Little Shop of Horrors Gets Saved By The Bell. I call this 5 song mixfilm STOMACH BARON (and I apologize to those who get the reference). Rather than natter on about the songs or the imaginary scenes they're supposed to go with, I chose to mark these with lyrical selections. Enjoy if you can, and a Happy ( & safe) Halloween to all! Unkle | Rabbit In Your Headlights "The devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth..." Björk | Bachelorette"I'm a fountain of blood // in the shape of a girl..." Menomena | Cough Coughing"Be careful who you tease..." Aphex Twin | Come To DaddyNot really quotable, but the building scream from 4:06 burned itself on the surface of my mind. Massive Attack | Angel"Love ya love ya love ya..."
