Just saw the new 3D resident evil yesterday. Initial verdict: Surprisingly fun.
I like that in many ways they are getting closer to the games in both look and feel, such as bringing in the dogs that just want to hug you with their whole body from RE4, as well as the way Wesker moved.
I like that they are clearly not taking themselves seriously at all at this point, and pretty much just seem to be sitting in a room and saying "What would be something fun to shoot?"
I like that they took away Alice's Tetsuo-ish world blasting powers almost immediately, and that when ever people died, the others around them would basically be like "Oh well, lost another one, lets move on." I suppose that after 5.9 billion people have died, losing one more wouldn't have much impact.
The only thing that I really didn't like was actually a result of decisions made in the previous films. Since they decided to go with the whole apocalypse thing, thats not something they can really take back, and say "whoops, we meant that the world wasn't destroyed, yeah." They have to kind of stick with it.
That being said, what the hell is Umbrella trying to accomplish by continuing to make and test stronger versions of the "T" virus? "500 years from now, when humanity is just starting to rebuild, we are going to make so much money!" It just doesn't make any sense. I can understand people still working for umbrella, they are kind of the last game in town, but by this point, you would think their primary goal would be survival, not making the thing thats killing everyone even stronger.
I also didn't like the overly obvious use of 3D, the totally unnecessary slow motion shots that just keep on going, and going, and GOOOOIIIINNNNGGGG, and that to me Wesker didn't sound nearly Wesker-ee enough. He just sounded like a regular villain, I missed his sneering purr.
All that being said, The film was actually tremendously fun, and if you haven't seen it yet, I recommend you check it out.
