So, as much of a video game nerd as I am, I love the music equally so. I have been known to listen to 8-bit chiptunes while driving. So I'm curious if anyone has any specific music that stands out to them. Specific song, soundtrack, composer, cover band, whatever. I'm also very into metal, so I'm a sucker for metal covers of the music. Such as www.metroidmetal.com, and dod.vgmix.com/(down at the moment). I just picked up this mashup of Dancing Mad and One Winged Angel(FF6 and FF7). www.tonydickinson.net/media/Prince_of_Darkness_-_Prancing_Dad.mp3 I'm feeling a little lightheaded afterward. I think I need a cigarette.

This is currently one of my favorite Chrono Trigger covers, performed by Danimal Cannon of Metroid Metal fame.
This style is the polar opposite of metal, but it's still pretty... uh, pretty. I really enjoy Kate Covington's fan vocal arrangements, so here's one from Final Fantasy IX.

[EDIT]: Holy GOD, Prancing Dad. You needed a cigarette afterwards, Chris? I was sweating when it finished. That song took ELECTROLYTES from me! Really tempted to try working out to this, but not without several energy drinks, a spotter, and a fainting couch.
Of all the video game music I can conjure to mind, right now for some reason this is stuck in my head:

Have you guys been to a Video Games Live concert? I went for the first time about two weeks before AX. Aside from the fact that it was at the Nokia Theater the same night as the NBA finals, it was really amazing and made me appreciate video game music in an entirely different way. Plus, since it was the same weekend as E3, we got a ton of really awesome guest composers! If you haven't been, I really recommend it!

I've been wanting to go to VGL ever since they started doing it. From what I've seen on youtube, though, that show just might bring me to tears.

I saw Video Games Live about 4 years ago when I was still living in Chicago. It was beautiful music, and a really fun time! The only downside to the evening was an over-enthusiastic fan in the audience yelling at the musicians on stage "you guys are teh shit" while the conductor was introducing the next song. This was the Chicago Pops Orchestra performing, I'm not sure they understood that that was supposed to be a compliment... Ah yes, people also heckled them to "play zelda!" or "do tetris!", which they did play eventually, but still. We could do with some concert etiquette lessons I fear if we want to keep having nice shows like these being put on...

haha, really? The mc specifically told the audience that they were fully encouraged to yell out compliments and happy thoughts throughout the concert. I guess it must vary from place to place, or they adapted to their audience in the last four years...

I imagine they've gotten used to it and it's probably a lot more rewarding to play to an audience that is really into it throughout the show than one that doesn't really respond until the end. I just felt bad because some of the musicians and the conductor looked a little alarmed at that particular compliment. Hopefully someone explained it too them later ^_^;;
Dear Friends was another lovely concert that was touring around some years ago, though I believe there is a different Final Fantasy symphony making the rounds now. I also saw a flyer for something called Hideo at AX, does anyone know anything about it? It's supposed to be a mix of anime and video game music, plus a light show I guess?

Video Games Live
Nobuo Uematsu and the Final Fantasy concerts
Rock versions of old school video game tunes that are badass
These are the kinds of things that hold me in ecstasy. I will so go if I ever have the chance. For now, I shall settle for watching streaming video or recorded shows/performances on youtube, dailymotion, and the like. Live music is generally better than studio albums for me.
So that would take care of the song bit. What about wine and women?

More talented musicians to follow on youtube:
lonlonjp does really nice accoustic covers, I'm pretty fond of this one from Symphony of the Night:
And another Castlevania one by 331Erock because it is AWESOME. If metal is more to your taste, this guy is pretty amazing:

So... after playing Bastion, to see the conclusion of my choice in the story, and getting this song ( supergiantgames.bandcamp.com/track/setting-sail-coming-home-end-theme) well... It hit me where I live. That's all I'm going to say. The Bastion Soundtrack is available through steam for $5, or you can buy both the game and the soundtrack in a bundle on steam for $19.99.

Thanks a lot Kevin. I've been listening to the Bastion OST (one song in particular) on repeat ALL DAY. Literally. Since about 7:30 am. And as soon as I can, I'm going to be singing it out loud. Probably in the shower. And I haven't even played the game yet.

Insidious, isn't it?
Setting Sail, Coming Home has been in my head for DAYS. I've been singing it / thinking about it so much, that I ended up writing down some of the improve lines I've been spouting, and they're more for Kid than either Zulf or Zia. Probably due to Kid not having a song of his own.
Oh well. It's all in fun.
